Twenty-eight-year-old Shane Walker has had his dream come true when he moves from Tulsa to the L.A.P.D. as a new K-9 officer. When he and his training officer are called to the home of Tyler Donovan, an actor that Shane has had a crush on for years, he finds the man he thought had it all was a man who was living in the shadows.
Tyler has been living with his boyfriend, Alex Campbell. Everyone saw them as a happy couple, but the truth was anything but. Tyler is a victim of abuse, abuse he takes because he feels responsible. Time and time again when the police have been called, Tyler has come up with excuses and refused to press charges. This time Alex.
Shane couldn’t let what happened go without saying something and he needed to make Tyler realize the danger of living with an abuser. Shane had firsthand information on abuse and what could happen. He makes Tyler see what abuse can lead to. Shane befriends Tyler and tries to make him leave his guilt behind. Can Shane make Tyler whole again? Can Tyler find love again without fear? These are the questions Shane wants answered as his feelings for Tyler grow deeper and deeper.
This was a beautiful story about two men brought together by grief and fear, and a story that makes it clear that women are not the only ones abused. There are men out there who are abused every day, even men who have the means to get free. Unlike many people out there, Tyler has money, a home and can easily leave his abuser behind. Like so many others, he doesn’t. I could have done this review without mentioning the abuse, but it is a very important subject and one that needs to be brought into the open.
I loved Tyler and Shane and especially Shane’s partner, his German Shepherd, Chase. This story touched on a serious issue and the author did a wonderful job in tackling it.
