This book took me in a very, very different direction from all the other books I’d written, switching to romantic suspense, the military, and having an already established couple. It was also the darkest book I’d ever written, delving into a world of arms dealing and drug addiction, as one of my characters, Shawn, takes on a dangerous undercover mission that will nearly break him and his partner/lover Connor. It was so different from all of my other “hearts and flowers” romance books that I nearly never published it. I’m glad friends talked me out of it, because it became my best-selling book and sparked four more books in the Shadow Unit series. Shawn sat on the floor of the shower, still fully dressed, the hot water pouring down on him. He was slumped up against the wall, knees pulled up to his chest, eyes squeezed shut, shoulders shaking as he cried.
His heart breaking, Connor undressed as quickly as he could and stepped into the shower, dropping down beside Shawn, pulling him toward himself.
“I’m so dirty, Finn,” Shawn choked out. “Everything with Jae, I’m so sorry…”
Connor swallowed hard. “Don’t you dare apologize,” he told his distraught, drugged out partner. “None of this is your fault.”
“Just want to get clean,” Shawn mumbled, pulling at his clothes.
Connor nodded. “Okay, we can do that,” he said gently, reaching for the buttons on Shawn’s soaking wet shirt. “Here, let me…”
Connor got Shawn undressed and spent the next long while tenderly washing his partner from head to toe, not missing one inch of bare skin, wanting to remove all trace of Jae Chan. Shawn was practically boneless by the time Connor got them both out of the shower and dried off, collapsing down onto the mattress as soon as they made it to the bed.
They lay on their sides facing one another, legs entwined, Connor’s fingers ghosting over Shawn’s arm, Shawn’s hand resting on Connor’s chest. As risky as this was, Connor was grateful for this stolen moment with Shawn, for them to reconnect with each other. Connor leaned forward and closed the small distance between them, pressing his lips to Shawn’s. The kiss was slow and soft, Connor savoring every moment of it after being apart from Shawn for so many days.
“I’ve got so much to tell you. But I’m so tired, Finn,” Shawn mumbled, resting his head against Connor’s shoulder.
“It’s okay, get some rest,” Connor whispered, cupping the back of Shawn’s head.
He rolled over onto his back then, taking Shawn with him, his partner a comfortable, heavy weight across his body. Connor wrapped his arms around Shawn as his partner burrowed his head further against Connor’s neck and shoulder.
“Don’t let go, Finn,” Shawn murmured, his breath soft against Connor’s skin.
Connor swallowed past the sudden lump in his throat and tightened his embrace. “Never.”
