GayRomLit 2014 – the Good and the Bad – a Newbie’s Perspective

GRL badge

Wow, what an interesting five days it’s been! I was attending the GayRomLit writers conference here in Chicago from last Tuesday night until Saturday night. It was the first of this kind of event I’ve ever been to and I came away with mixed feelings about it.

I was really hoping for workshop panels every day (like at the RWA Spring Fling conference), but those were only on the first day, and the majority of them were pretty basic, if you were just starting out as an author. So unfortunately I didn’t really get much out of those. Though I did enjoy the one on writing different POV’s.

Thursday was my busy day since that was the Supporting Author book signing and the Author Lounge. I’m totally kicking myself for forgetting to take a photo of me and my table set up to show you guys. I thought for sure I’d be sitting there for two hours and no one would even approach me, but it didn’t turn out like that at all. I was busy talking to people nearly non-stop and signing books and tote bags and even a few iPad cases! Had quite a few people compliment me on my book cover designs, which makes me happy since I’m the one who made them. 🙂  I talked to many people who weren’t familiar with my writing but who were interested. Always great to get new fans! I even sold some books! I didn’t quite understand the purpose of the Author Lounge (especially being directly after the book signing) but it did give me an opportunity to hand out my eBook sampler booklets. I printed 20 and only came home with six. So overall I’d say that Thursday was a success.

As for Friday and Saturday – I went to a couple of author Q&A’s and discussion panels but they nearly always strayed from what the topics were supposed to be, which disappointed me. Those that did stay on track I enjoyed very much. Especially the “Snark” panel with K.A. Mitchell, Jordan Castillo Price and Z.A. Maxfield. I totally fangirl’ed all over K.A. and Jordan in the Featured Author book signing. 🙂

For me, there was just a lot of downtime in general. Which for most of the people there it was a good thing since they were all in groups talking, catching up with one another. But since this was my first GRL and I’m fairly new to Facebook, I barely knew five people out of the 300 that were there. Thank goodness my friend Gina Storm Grant was there! We spent a lot of time together. 🙂  But it was nice to see gals from my local Chicago m/m book club. And I did make some new friends and got to talk to several reviewers who have hosted me on their sites, giving me the chance to say Thank You in person, so it wasn’t all bad.

I just felt like a fish out of water, you know? I’ve been so used to attending fan cons for the past 15 years and being so comfortable at them and knowing everyone that this was a new experience for me and I felt…adrift. But speaking of fans – I met two very well known Supernatural fanfic writers! One of whom is now a professional writer like me. It happened totally out of the blue simply because of a comment I said to that said writer when she was describing her latest book to me. She said it dealt with ghosts, etc and I’m like, “Oh I know I’ll enjoy it. Supernatural is my favorite TV show.” Her eyes got huge and next thing I know we’re having a major SPN fangirl moment! She then whispered to me that she writes fanfic and is on LiveJournal. When I said I was too she confided in me her LJ name. Out of respect I will not out her or her lovely friend that Gina and I spent time hanging out with and chatting sitting next to the fireplace. But you know who you are! [waves]

The best part about the conference were the parties on Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday we had the Casino Night party where we were given $500 in play money that we turned in for chips. They had actual dealers there for poker, blackjack, craps and roulette. What was great was that the dealers were basically helping us cheat to win, since most of us had NO idea what we were doing! It was awesome and a lot of fun. Then on Saturday it was the Time Travel costume party. It was really neat to see the vast majority of people dressed up and the music was all from the 70’s and 80’s. Gina and I danced the night away!

Here are a couple of photos of us all dressed up for the parties:

At this point I’m not sure I’ll attend another GRL. I had major issues with the way the organizers treated the authors in regards to selling our books, all of which was sprung on us at the last minute. Had I known it all up front I never would’ve signed up as a Supporting Author and saved myself a lot of money. But in the end I am glad that I did go to at least experience what GRL was all about. And I didn’t have a horrible time. I really didn’t. I did meet people and sell books. I just learned that I’m more suited to a convention about TV shows and movies. 🙂

Dancing in the Dark – by Jamie Lynn Miller

Connor woke to bright sunlight shining against his closed eyelids. He slowly opened his eyes, blinking against the offending glare and found himself staring up at an unfamiliar ceiling. Momentarily confused, he turned his head to the right, finding an equally unfamiliar window. Tipping his head to the left, the events of last night suddenly came back with startling clarity as he spied the naked man sleeping next to him.

Shit.

As quietly as he could, Connor slipped from the bed, praying he didn’t wake the sleeping man. He crept around the room, completely naked, looking for his clothes. Which were apparently strewn from one side to the other, along with items that clearly were not his. He found his white briefs near the end of the bed next to his jeans. His shoes and socks were near the bedroom door. And finally his white tank top, lying mostly inside the attached bathroom.

His bundle of clothes in hand, he decided to dress in the bathroom, then make his getaway as quickly as possible. He pulled on his tiny briefs and then his tank top. He made to pull on his jeans next when out of the corner of his eye he spied the beautiful tattooed man still asleep on the bed, lying on his stomach. Connor paused and leaned back against the wall, helpless to stop the memories of the previous night from flooding back.

He closed his dark brown eyes, one hand sliding down past the waistband of his briefs, the other sliding up under his shirt. He sighed as he touched himself, realizing how tender his body was, a pleasant ache created by hands other than his own. A stranger’s hands.

Connor’s breath caught as he took himself in hand, started stroking, his fingers gently tugging on his nipple. He was back there in the club. Music pounding, lights flashing, amidst a sea of dancing, pulsing male bodies. Then hands were on his hips. A stranger’s hands, tugging him backwards, flush up against a tightly muscled body. They moved together effortlessly, seamlessly, as if they had been lovers for years. Connor lost himself in their intimate dance, craving more. So when the stranger whispered in his ear and took his hand, Connor followed him willingly.

They continued their intimate dance throughout the night, their naked bodies moving together, finding sweet release over and over again. Connor’s hand sped up, stroking himself faster, feeling the stranger’s hands on him and not his own. Remembering what he had wanted him to do. What he had asked him to do. Connor bit his lip, pinched his nipple harder.

Almost there…

“Is this a one-man show or can anyone join in?”

Connor gasped, startled, removing his hands quickly from underneath his clothing, his eyes flying open…to be pinned by eyes as dark with arousal as his own.

The beautiful stranger – no not anymore, it was Blake, his name was Blake – was lying on his side now, stroking his rapidly growing erection. He smiled and winked at Connor, held out his hand.

“C’mere…”

And just like last night, Connor went willingly, unable to resist the pull this man had on him. He came to a stop next to the bed and Blake rose up on his knees, snagging the bottom of Connor’s shirt, pulling it over his head. Then Blake sank back down, this time hooking his fingers on the waistband of Connor’s briefs, pushing them down until they pooled on the floor. With a tug on Connor’s wrist they were on the bed, legs tangled together.

Blake rolled Connor onto his back, his mouth hot and wet and insistent on the side of Connor’s neck, moving lower and lower with purpose. Stopping to lick and suck on a nipple, a tongue dipped into his navel and then down between his legs.

Connor sucked in a sharp breath, his tender body on fire once again, Blake’s mouth and hands working their magic as they had so many times last night. Connor let go, gave in, and minutes later he was left gasping for breath, his head spinning with the force of his release.

Blake moved back up Connor’s body and kissed him deeply, tenderly, covering Connor’s body with his own. When he pulled back there was a question in his eyes.

“Were you going to leave without saying anything to me?” Blake asked, disappointment coloring his voice.

Connor sighed, guilt crossing his features. He glanced away for a moment before meeting Blake’s gaze. “About last night…I don’t know what I was thinking. That’s not who I am. I don’t do one-night stands.”

“Then don’t let it be one. Stay,” Blake whispered. “I know you felt it, too, in the way we moved together at the club. I’ve never felt such an instant connection to someone.” He cupped the side of Connor’s face, his thumb stroking his cheek. “Let me be your dance partner again. And again.”

Connor tugged Blake’s head down, their lips almost touching. He smiled. “Only if I get to lead.”

And with a kiss, he stole away Blake’s reply.

An Endless Sea of Stars (NEW RELEASE FOR GRL!)

The year is 2121. While Earth has conquered exploration of the Milky Way, we have yet to develop an interstellar engine to take us beyond our own galaxy. Thus the Intergalactic Exploration Alliance and the Gemini Project were formed.

Lieutenant Tobias Dekker is fresh out of the IEA academy and determined to be assigned to the Gemini engineering team. Putting career above all else. He knows from experience that relationships have no place in the Alliance. Commander Caden Flynn is equally determined to see the Gemini prototype take flight to uncharted space. The engine is his late father’s design and he wants nothing more than to be the test pilot that breaks the next light speed barrier.

Two men dreaming of a sea of stars find that it’s instead an ocean here on Earth that brings them together. Can Cade convince Toby to open up his heart and take a chance on love and explore the universe with him, side by side?
