Shawn sighed, his expression softening. Meal forgotten, he made his way across the room to his partner, stepping up close behind him, wrapping his arms around Connor’s waist, drawing him back against his chest. He kissed the side of Connor’s neck and felt him release a long breath. The window reflected back the sadness in Connor’s eyes.
Heart aching for his partner, Shawn raised Connor’s hand. He knew the photo well. It had permanent residence in Connor’s wallet.
It was a picture of Connor, his parents and his younger sister, all smiling, happy. The last picture taken of them ten years ago, one month before a drunk driver claimed their lives, an accident only Connor survived.
Connor’s voice was thick with unshed tears. “I miss them…”
Shawn turned Connor to face him. “I know. For four years I’ve watched you suffer through this holiday alone, and I felt helpless to do anything about it. But not now. You were there for me when I needed you most. You’re not alone anymore, Finn. Let me be here for you. Please.”
Connor sagged against him, falling into Shawn’s comforting embrace, burying his face against Shawn’s neck, where Shawn could feel his partner’s tears against his skin. Shawn swallowed hard against the sudden emotion building up inside of him. He cupped the back of Connor’s head, fingers smoothing his short, sandy brown hair.
A long moment later Connor raised his head, his eyes wet, but clearer now, as if the clouds were finally lifting.
“Thank you,” he whispered, his lips finding Shawn’s for a lingering, heartfelt kiss.
After too much time apart, Shawn’s body quickly began to respond. But he pulled back from the kiss, not wanting to try and take things further unless Connor was feeling it, too. He cupped his partner’s face, felt the heat of his skin and saw a fire in his eyes that matched the one burning in the hearth behind them.
A tiny nod answered the question in Shawn’s eyes. Connor’s mouth slanted over his, tongue sweeping out across Shawn’s lips, asking for entrance, which Shawn swiftly gave, unable to suppress the groan that escaped him as the kiss deepened.
