4 STARS for Rogue Soldier!

Many thanks to Heather at Bayou Book Junkie for the great review!

This is Book 2 of the Shadow Unit series.  This book seems to start a few months after Book 1 ended.  It could be read without reading Book 1, as information shared in the first book is retold in this one but don’t skip the first book!  Shawn and Connor are worth reading about!  In this book, the Shadow Unit group is working in Kuala Lumpur when they are called to another mission.  This mission is being led by Shawn’s former partner and lover in the CIA and Shawn knows he’s not to be trusted.  Shawn’s focus is torn between the mission and trying to figure out what Julian is up to.  Julian plans on getting Shawn back in his life no matter whose life he has to end to make that happen.  The Shadow Unit team must face the threats from the new mission, as well as a spy in their midst.

In this book we learn more about Shawn, Connor and the Shadow Unit group.  Shawn and Connor’s relationship continues to grow and strengthen and they’re once against faced with challenges that may result in one or both of their deaths.  As with the previous book, it took me a little while to get into the story and you definitely recognize that this is fiction, but once pulled into the story, I couldn’t stop reading.

I think what hurts my immersion is that I really don’t know Shawn and Connor.  They’re an established couple and they’re able to work through and support each other through any issues but we just find out information about them as it pertains to the missions.  I don’t feel like I have a firm grip on who they are.  But, maybe it’s because I need to not look at this as a romance story but more a book about missions, with the MC’s being partners in love.  But, however you choose to look at it, the series is enjoyable!

Rating:  4 stars

4.5 STARS for Rogue Soldier!

Many thanks to Mel at Alpha Book Club for the fantastic review!

Review: Book 2 is AMAZING!!!! So while I enjoyed the first book in this series, this book was significantly better and more enjoyable. Perhaps it was because I already fell in love with the main characters, or knew what to expect in a “second book” (versus missing the meet-cute in the first book), either way, it was well written and read in one sitting.

In this book, there’s a third party that comes into the mix with a suspenseful plotline… a “what is he doing here” question persists throughout. Which kept me guessing (although if you’re looking for a shocker, that’s not quite what to expect). I digress. While only a handful of months had transpired between the first book and this one, the characters seemed much more connected and more of a couple than before. When trouble strikes this time, it comes in many ways… and all at once.

One irksome thing, if you read the series in a row, there are a few passages that are copied verbatim from the first book to the second (more background and place setting, etc.). Other than that, I really enjoyed the development of both characters and the writing in this book seemed easier to read and more engaging than the first installment. Perhaps the best leap from book one to two that I’ve seen. Oh yeah, and um, still super hot sex all the time.

4 STARS for Rogue Soldier!

Many thanks to Sue at Books Laid Bare Boys for the wonderful review!

“The first book in this series was a difficult one to read.

I became emotionally invested in what Shawn and Connor had to go through.

This time we catch up with them on a new mission and Connor is debating whether to take a promotion that would ultimately take him away from Shawn for months at a time.

He had just accidentally caused a loss of life that he can’t cope with and seems about ready to throw his own away with it.

Being ordered to take part in a mission before he decides, he comes face to face with a lover from Shawn’s past.

With the two men already fighting over his new job, it could be the thing that breaks them for good.

Julian knows every little secret from Shawn’s past and something isn’t right.

He wants Connor out of the way and Shawn back by his side and the worrying thing is neither man has any idea of the lengths he will go to…..

A thrilling ride with a stunning conclusion.”

4 out of 5 stars.

5 STARS for Rogue Soldier!

Many thanks to Evelise at Sexy Erotic Xciting for the fantastic review!

New favorites Shawn and Connor were back in Jamie Lynn MillersRogue Soldier. This book contained everything I looked for in an intriguing military story.

Emotionally spent from their previous mission, Shawn and Connor were catapulted back into the world of shadows, and must come to terms with enemies close and afar.

Both Shawn and Connor were likeable characters with baggage, but with the fortitude to go forward, professionally and personally. Their love and admiration emanated through Ms. Millers’ writing style keeping me captivated throughout the book.

An HEA with the potential for more I look forward to the next installment of Shadow Unit.

Definite S.E.X.

4 STARS for Broken Soldier AND Rogue Soldier!

Many thanks to Ilona Fenton for the fantastic reviews!

Having grown up in the forces and married a soldier I really love military themed books and this was my main criteria for saying yes to reading this book. As it happens this book was much more than a ‘military men in covert missions’ romance . It was a look at what good people go through to stop the bad guys in this world. The author has no qualms about giving the reader a realistic and harrowing portrayal of all that Shawn goes through both during and after the mission. However I wouldn’t want to leave you with a negative impression of the book because I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading book two.

So as previously stated I was looking forward to reading this book and very grateful to the publisher for having given me both books to read. Why? Well firstly because it continues the story of Shawn and Connor and if I hadn’t read book one I would have been a little lost (but enough back story was given to fill in any gaps if you had come to this one first). Again Jamie takes the reader on a harrowing journey that seems very realistic to me. This time it’s Connor being put through the ringer and as before we get the blood and gore and the feelings. I just hope there’s a book three to come, I know I’ll be adding it to my library if there is.

Lives Destroyed by a ROGUE SOLDIER-A Review

Thank you to Veronica at V’S Reads Blog for this fantastic 4 STAR review of Rogue Soldier!

V's Reads...

Hi there! Today I’m sharing a review for a contemporary military M/M romantic suspense novel from Jamie Lynn Miller. ROGUE SOLDIER is the second book in her series, and is probably best enjoyed if you’ve already read BROKEN SOLDIER, but it’s not a requirement.

rogue-cover-final-6x9About the book:
Shadow Unit may have overturned the illegal arms cartel in Kuala Lumpur, but the harrowing undercover op left emotional scars on Sergeants Shawn Weller and Connor Finley. Slowly, patiently, they piece their partnership back together, closer now than ever before.

But the arrival of Julian Montgomery, Shawn’s former CIA handler and lover, threatens to tear them apart. Julian knows all of Shawn’s secrets as well as the past Shawn has kept hidden from Connor. Now the self-serving Julian wants Shawn back—with the CIA and with him. No one will get in his way. Including Connor.

4 STARS for Broken Soldier!

Broken cover 6x9 BOOK 1

Thank you to Bayou Book Junkie for the great review!

The Shadow Unit series is about a covert anti-terrorism task force formed between the UK and US.  Connor Finley and Shawn Weller are partners, on the job and off.  This first book in the series is about their undercover work to take down an arms dealer (Jai) and what each must do and overcome to accomplish that task.
Both MC’s go undercover, Connor is hired as security in Jai’s Club and Shawn becomes his lover.  Going into the mission, they didn’t know that Jai controls the man he’s with by getting him hooked on drugs and controlling the supplies.  Shawn is being given heroin daily and has to struggle through his addiction to complete the mission.  Connor is torn apart watching Shawn become more addicted.  But, regardless of the cost, they are able to stop the arms’ deal and take care of Jai and his associates.  And Connor works to bring Shawn back to him.
This is the first book from this author I have read and I was pleasantly surprised.  I had some trouble getting into the book in the beginning and I definitely did not buy the premise or actions of this unit but it is fiction, so it doesn’t have to be true.  It’s not a light-hearted read but once I was pulled into the book, I couldn’t stop reading!

Dark and gritty M/M love story amid a deep cover operation
By V. Rundell of V’s Reads on October 12, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a dark contemporary spy novel that features a M/M love story, hard drug use, deep cover, dubious consent, death, and destruction with a happy ending.

Connor Finley and Shawn Weller are operatives in Shadow Unit, a inter-national cadre of soldiers and infiltration specialists (think ex-CIA/MI5) that go in and “get the job done” against mega-badguys. They are also covert lovers, having built a friendship over the course of years, and now being a committed couple for the past five months. The current mark is Jae Chan, an arms dealer operating out of Kuala Lumpur. Jae likes his men drugged out and biddable, as Shawn discovers as soon as he’s able to catch Jae’s roving eye in a gay entertainment club run by Jae. Connor’s hired on as club security, but Shawn’s the one who’s in the most danger.

If you take a gander at the cover, you’ll see cut lines of drugs. Expect Shawn to be pushed into taking both cocaine and heroin in order to maintain his cover, and get close enough to Jae to get the necessary evidence. Also, Jae’s going to use Shawn rather horribly, and Shawn’s guilt over both betraying his lover, and getting dependent upon the drugs, is a tough journey to experience. You may also notice the title is: BROKEN SOLDIER, because Shawn gets REALLY messed up in the process of maintaining this covert-op. I’ve never read a book with so much hard drug use, and it wasn’t pleasant, from a voyeuristic standpoint. I’m a gal who got raised in the “Just Say No” era, so I’m not fascinated by drug-culture. I did feel as if the experiences were described with an eye to reality, and nothing about this situation with Shawn is positive. He’s trying to romance a scumbag drug-dealing arm-dealing bully, and he knows his life is constantly on the line.

Connor has to watch from afar, and provide as much back-up as he can to Shawn without tipping off Jae’s many bodyguards. Meanwhile, seeing Shawn be used and abused make him furious–and he’s really worried about the seemingly constant drug use he witnesses. Will Shawn make it through this mission intact? Will Connor blow their cover to save Shawn?

I’ll tell you, it was a bit harrowing. There’s a good build-up of suspense, with death on the menu. The climax wasn’t nearly the end of the book–because we still needed to see Shawn get off the junk. If anything, this book obliterated any hint of desire I may have ever harbored for heroin. Ugh. Yuck! That said, the walk-back from the edge that Shawn experiences in Connor’s loving embrace was very tender.

This is a work of fiction, and I know that reality is likely not as convenient as the set-up in this book, but the situations felt authentic, and interesting. The emotional dilemmas and hard choices within reflect a seedy subculture that I’m sure exists, to some degree, somewhere. I liked the strong love between Connor and Shawn, and I’m looking forward to following their dangerous adventures.
