Throwback Thursday – Broken Soldier

Broken cover 6x9 BOOK 1

It was a year ago this month that Broken Soldier (Shadow Unit Book 1) was published. With Book 3 (Hunted Soldier)  well underway, I wanted to show some love on this Throwback Thursday to Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller’s first mission with a free read of Chapter One!

SUMMARY:

Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller are dedicated soldiers working covert ops for Shadow Unit — a joint UK/US anti-terrorism task force.

Partners in the field and out, they had been through hell together for the last four years and made it through standing side by side. But when their latest undercover op to bring down an arms dealer plunges them into a world of drugs, sex and violence, Shawn must literally get in bed with the enemy in order to complete the mission. And Connor is forced to watch, helpless, as his partner is broken into pieces.

Will love be enough to put them both back together or will this be their final mission?

WARNING: Contains scenes of drug use, graphic sex and realistic situations

CHAPTER ONE

The first thing Sergeant Connor Finley noticed was the heat. He hadn’t been on the tiny balcony for more than three minutes and his green t-shirt was already damp with sweat and sticking to his chest and back. What he wouldn’t give to be at home in his native cool and wet London instead of Kuala Lumpur in the middle of summer. And at the Ritz instead of this crappy hotel in the middle of Chinatown.

Connor brushed a bead of sweat from his brow and leaned cautiously against the sagging railing to better overlook his surroundings. It was an assault to all five of his senses. Everywhere he looked was a riot of color – the bright clothing of the tourists and locals, the fabric awnings over the shops and the flags flying above the stalls that lined every inch of the crowded streets. He drew in a breath of air that was filled with the smells of a complex variety of cuisines from a wide cross-section of cultures being sold from the food vendors. Even up here on the fourth floor, it wasn’t difficult for Connor to hear the sounds of dozens of conversations, the honking of car horns or the shouts of the vendors trying to entice both locals and tourists alike to purchase their wares.

Behind him, Connor heard his hotel room door open and close, but he didn’t turn from his observations. He’d know the footfalls of his partner anywhere. A moment later Sergeant Shawn Weller stepped up beside him, a lit cigarette held between his fingers. Connor turned to look at his partner as Shawn leaned on the balcony railing.

Besides the fact that both he and Shawn were 36 years-old, they were a study in contrasts. Darkness and light.

Connor and Shawn – Favorite Couple 2016

I am SO honored to have Shawn and Connor chosen as Freya’s Favorite Character Couple in 2016 at Sinfully Gay Romance!! – “Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller are from Jamie Lynn Miller’s ‘Shadow Unit’ books. The way this couple understand and support each other through life and death situations is touching. They are tough and badass, but soft and caring towards each other too. My heart melted for them.”

5 STARS for Broken Soldier!

Broken cover 6x9 BOOK 1
5.0 out of 5 stars  Soldier Boys
By Darren Ferris on December 19, 2016
Format: Paperback

BROKEN SOLDIER paints a quick but thorough portrait of five strong and diverse personalities working both independently and as a unit to successfully complete their mission. The main characters of Connor and Shawn are immediately catapulted to the forefront of the book. The dynamics between these men are explosive yet heart-wrenching. The love they feel for each other is put to the test when Shawn willingly goes undercover and becomes hooked on Heroin for the sole purpose of taking down a “Drug Lord” who just so happens to have an arsenal of nuclear weapons available for quick sale to the highest bidder.

As we see Shawn losing the fight against a Heroin addiction, his lover and teammate Connor (also undercover) monitors the sad situation – helpless to stop the horrific events that are unfolding. I read with amazement how Jamie blended a story of love and helplessness within the context of covert military operation. My heart was in my throat the entire time I devoured this book. Without giving too much away, allow me to say that the final portion of this book demonstrates how only unyielding love and patient support can make our broken soldier whole once again. This was an awesome read from start to finish. BROKEN SOLDIER was chocked full of the romantic suspense I have come to appreciate. Thank you, Jamie!

4 STARS for Broken Soldier!

Broken cover 6x9 BOOK 1

4.0 out of 5 starsGreat Start to a Series!
By Greebo on November 17, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
I loved this book! It was such a great read. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t stop reading until it was over. Jamie Lynn Miller grabbed me by my collar, and she dragged me through so many ups and downs, and so many heartbreaking scenes, and I had no choice but to go along for the ride.

I am not going to go into story details. The blurb sums it up perfectly. It’s no nonsense and concise. Instead, I’m going to just tell you how much I loved the main characters, Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller. They are an established couple…partners on the job and in life. We don’t get to watch them fall in love, but we are given snippets of times they spent in the field. Their feelings for each other are obvious and deep. They’re also incredibly dedicated to their jobs at Shadow Unit. They’re willing to do some really harsh things for an assignment, and the assignment in “Broken Soldier” was HARSH. I admired them for this because, lord knows, I would NEVER do what was asked of them. No way. No how. Uh-uh! Watching Shawn doing what he had to do was heartbreaking. I cried quite a bit. Still, he refused to quit. Even when it got to be too much, he wanted to see it through to the very end. Speaking of heartbreaking, Connor…oh, Connor. His love for Shawn never wavers, even when he has to watch him in such a terrible predicament. He wanted to comfort him and pull him out of the assignment because it was killing him…and Shawn. That, to me, is more loving than any amount of hearts or flowers.

Shoot…the assignment wasn’t even the half of it. It was what came after. Shawn’s world was shattered by what he had to do, but Connor never felt less of him. He lovingly helped Shawn come back to himself, and it wasn’t pleasant. What I really liked was how Ms. Miller brought in flashbacks of things that Shawn and Connor had gone through together. Harrowing, funny, sexy…they really helped me to understand the relationship the men have.

I also wanted to point out, without spoilers, the action in “Broken Soldier”. It was VERY well written. It flowed smoothly. Lots of times, action scenes don’t feel quite…real? It is obvious Jaime Lynn Miller did her research, and that made for fantastic scenes. Violent, yes. Necessary to the plot? Yes. Also, it made me cheer for Shadow Unit and thrilled me when they finally brought down the bad guys.

I highly recommend “Broken Soldier”. One more thing. There is a warning in the blurb for a reason. Heed it. Some scenes are disturbing. They’re not over the top, but it wasn’t pretty. Shawn and Connor love each other so much, but it’s not all wine and roses, if you follow me. All in all, this is the start of what will certainly be a fantastic series. I’m excited to see where my men will go next. Read this one.
