Received a fantastic 5 STAR review for Broken Solider from Sinfully Gay Romance Book Reviews!
Soldiers Connor and Shawn are members of an inter-agency group called the Shadow Unit. Its elite members specialise in undercover operations. They’re tasked with taking down an underworld organisation whose business is alcohol/sex and drugs, but who have recently branched out into the arms business.
Shawn and Connor’s assignments are to get inside and gather information, one as security, one as a boy-toy to a leader with a penchant for western men. The drugs lord is also suspected of bumping off his old man.
What the bosses of the Shadow Unit don’t know is that Connor and Shawn are lovers, and have been in love for some time. All that being said, Shawn and Connor are realists. They aren’t under any illusions over what their job, has, will and may contain. They are prepared to do what is necessary for the safety of all.
The boys are opposites in many ways except their love for each other. And, the author quickly establishes exactly how close the men are. Their last time together before the op, almost made me cry. The scene was absolutely beautiful.
What follows is an eye-opening story about what members of our government agencies are prepared to go through for the greater good. Shawn is subjected to drugs and rape while Connor has no choice but to watch and attempt to limit the damage. Emotionally and physically their assignment is brutal.
The intensity and imagery the author provides made it impossible for me not to get caught up in the mission these guys were completing. I hated the bad guys, could easily picture the drug using scenes and the after effects. My heart went out to Connor, who could see his man being taken apart and praying the operation was over before the point of no return.
There was so much I liked about this story. The length of it ensured the action didn’t drag on. It was fast paced, and the hooks to keep me interested just kept coming. There were times I wanted to cringe at what was happening to Shawn. But again the author was smart. In some scenes – instead of allowing the reader to experience the brutality along with Shawn, his coping mechanisms were used instead, which were his intimate times with Connor. Yet, what was actually happening remained in the background.
There are a number of ABC’s I could use to describe Broken Soldier. Anguish, action packed, angst, ass kicking, awesome, brutal, bastards, caring, cocky and cruel. Others include loving, duty bound and humbling.
I’d like to thank Nicole Dennis for stopping by my blog today! Well, er, actually it’s Conor Flemming, one half of the duo in Whatever it Takes. 🙂 Conor sat down with me to answer some questions so we can get to know him and his partner, Riley Gordon. Take it away, Conor!
A handsome dark-haired man with gentle hazel-green eyes and clothes dusted with flour and spots of frosting sits down in the chair. He looks over and waves with a warm smile.
Conor: Hello to everyone and thank you for having me on this wonderful page today. Umm. My name is Conor Flemming. Yes, that’s a Conor with one N. I know, it’s strange. I design and decorate cakes for my company, Ambrosia Bakery. It seems I make an appearance in a new novella called Whatever It Takes with my partner, Riley Gordan. Riley is usually better at these things than I am. He’s the wedding professional and organizer while I just work with the sweet stuff. What would you like to know about me?
1.What was the hardest thing for you to overcome that you didn’t think would be an issue?
Conor: Oh boy. Way to hit a fella in the gut on the first pitch. Wow. Umm. It was the monster of distrust walking across my shoulders. This perky twink kept me away from Riley’s office and off-handedly telling me how wonderful Riley is when they’re together. After 12 years with the same man, especially when you’re both facing forty, those words have a tendency to stick around. Like frosting. I never believed Riley would cheat on me and it was hard to even consider it.
2. What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
Conor: *chuckles* This is a funny one because it comes up in the story. I enjoy relaxing, getting off my feet and just chilling with Riley. Perhaps we cook a meal together. Sometimes Riley will drag me shopping for one thing or another. He’s the shopaholic and clothes hog, not me.
After baking and decorating like crazy, you would think I don’t want to go near a cake, frosting or even a piece of marzipan again. But, nah, I like to experiment at home, testing flavors or techniques. Riley is often my taste-tester – good and bad.
3. What does romance mean to you?
Conor: Wow. Good one. Man, umm, it doesn’t mean sweeping a partner off their feet in a grand gesture. Just one. Though, Riley is damn good at creating those gestures and let me tell you, my feet were well swept.
Though, it isn’t that one big thing to base your whole relationship. It’s the little things, you know? The secret smile. The certain look you know is just for you. Even a crazy series of texts during a stressful day. Riley and I often drove to work together, drank coffee in one of our offices and then went on with our day. It was those few minutes where we can reconnect before life pulls us in opposite directions.
4. What is your greatest achievement?
Conor: My first achievement is finishing culinary academy with a major in baking and pastry art and getting an apprenticeship right away with a top-notch bakery. I was at the tail end of the apprenticeship and ready to start my bakery when I met Riley. He already had his company and help to show me the ropes.
What I consider my greatest achievement? My relationship with Riley. I’ll stand by him no matter what. I know he’ll stand by me. That’s what love is and we work at it every day.
5. What one thing would you change about yourself if you could and why?
Conor: I’ve always been quiet, content to be in the background and letting my talent and gifts show through my cakes. If I could, I would like to be more outgoing, I guess is the word, not as wild and strong as Riley, but able to stand up for myself. Like with that blasted little brat getting in my way. How I wanted to put my foot down and give that kid a piece of my mind, but my manners and upbringing got the better of me and I walked away. If I could, I wouldn’t have walked away. I would have confronted him and not feel guilty about it.
Why? That’s easy. Riley is mine.
It takes an eye-opening talk for Riley Gordan to realize there’s something wrong in his twelve-year relationship with Conor Flemming. He creates extravagant events for same-sex proposals and weddings to over-the-top holiday parties, but he never considered one for Conor and him. Busier than ever, he realized his time with Conor had shrunk. He decides to use his event planning skills and put them to work to rekindle the spark.
Conor Flemming creates extraordinary cakes for anything from a cancer survivor’s celebration of life to a same-sex wedding, but never one for himself. When it comes to his life with Riley, he knows it’s failing, but not sure where it all went wrong. The silence hurts and worries him. Until a flurry of text messages changes the situation.
